Volunteer Service Hour Reporting
The Association is dedicated to assisting the Cooperative Extension Service with recognizing volunteers and providing them with a certificate and name badge. Your volunteer hours make a difference in promoting and sharing best gardening practices and they do not expire! The following address is for a VSH Reporting form click on link.
In order to better serve our members, the SEAKMGA would like to start tracking the number of hours our wonderful Master Gardeners contribute to our communities. If you live in Southeast Alaska, follow the link to the Volunteer Service Hour submitting form. Then, please also email and/or snail mail your logged VSH to the Association and Juneau Cooperative Extension Service at the following addresses.

How You Can Become a Member
Attendance & participation is open to any person or organization interested in the mission of the Association and desire to belong to the Southeast Alaska Master Gardeners Association.
Membership is automatic after you attend 40 hours of class time in a CES approved Master Gardener Class.
There is a class provided, at a cost, through the Juneau UAF Cooperative Extension Office on a two year cycle.
It is available virtually and currently offered in even numbered years. 2024 was the most recent class.
There is also a Scholarship program. We ask you to volunteer your time with community related projects but we also offer you money back! One is required to complete the course work, then the 40 VSH within the first year of the last day class, then the Extension will refund to you, $100. If you complete the aforementioned requirements within 2 years of the last day of class, the Association will refund you $50.00.
We also offer many opportunities to help you with your service hours, email us if you need hours. One way to earn hours is to provide content, such as articles, for our website. Send us an email if you need help with hours!
Currently there are no yearly membership dues.

Presidents Message
January 2024
Greetings Gardeners,
It is with great pleasure that I assume the role of president for a second time. It is my hope for the coming year that we offer southeast Alaska gardeners a robust selection of workshops that will inspire participants to improve their abilities and gardens.
A little bit about me and my background. I was born in Portsmouth, England and my great grandfather was a professional gardener. He was in charge of the extensive gardens and greenhouses that existed on the community property of the local insane asylum, Saint James Hospital. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/St_James%27_Hospital,_Portsmouth
As a child my mum and my adored aunt both had gardens and as soon as I could I grew my own vegetable garden, which was 100 feet by 100 feet, on a cooperative farm in 1976. I spent $100 for the entire year’s grocers and grew everything else. I was hooked. It was in my genes apparently.
My dream was to build my own house and once again have a garden. Thankfully, my wonderful husband Detlef Buettner supported that dream. Today, I take great satisfaction growing flowers, bushes, vegetables and eating our own produce.
My educational background is not in botany, but rather I have a bachelor's degree in education and a master's degree in public administration. I worked for the state of Alaska for many years. Now, in retirement aligning my gardening passion and education, with the Master Gardener program, is a lovely fit for me.
I hope, through the Master Gardeners Program, that others are also inspired to take on the gardening journey! Gardening in southeast Alaska can be a very rewarding adventure.
