PRESIDENTS MESSAGE
January 2024
Greetings Gardeners,
It is with great pleasure that I assume the role of president for a second time. It is my hope for the coming year that we offer southeast Alaska gardeners a robust selection of workshops that will inspire participants to improve their abilities and gardens.
A little bit about me and my background. I was born in Portsmouth, England and my great grandfather was a professional gardener. He was in charge of the extensive gardens and greenhouses that existed on the community property of the local insane asylum, Saint James Hospital. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/St_James%27_Hospital,_Portsmouth
As a child my mum and my adored aunt both had gardens and as soon as I could I grew my own vegetable garden, which was 100 feet by 100 feet, on a cooperative farm in 1976. I spent $100 for the entire year’s grocers and grew everything else. I was hooked. It was in my genes apparently.
My dream was to build my own house and once again have a garden. Thankfully, my wonderful husband Detlef Buettner supported that dream. Today, I take great satisfaction growing flowers, bushes, vegetables and eating our own produce.
My educational background is not in botany, but rather I have a bachelor's degree in education and a master's degree in public administration. I worked for the state of Alaska for many years. Now, in retirement aligning my gardening passion and education, with the Master Gardener program, is a lovely fit for me.
I hope, through the Master Gardeners Program, that others are also inspired to take on the gardening journey! Gardening in southeast Alaska can be a very rewarding adventure.
